Triple signing sets Milton Keynes Brass off on an exciting start to 2025

Milton Keynes Brass had a turbulent end to 2024 with the loss of a few members through a variety of personal lifestyle choices. We were particularly disheartened to wave farewell to our Principal Cornet player Matt Ball who had been an active member of the band for 26 years. Though as with all changes, comes new and exciting opportunities and as 2025 began the band spirited into the recruitment process for a Musical Director, Principal Cornet and Solo Euphonium.
The band soon auditioned Ben Smith on Euphonium and John Kinsella on Cornet, under the supportive guidance of Neil Brownless BSc MMus who had stepped in to conduct whilst a permanent member was being sought. As January came to a close, we are delighted to announce that both Ben and John accepted the Solo Euphonium and Principal Cornet seats and became substantive members of the band.
“After a short break from playing, I’m really looking forward to getting back to it and am delighted to have found a friendly and welcoming band to do so with.” Ben Smith
“I’m delighted to join such a hard-working, friendly and ambitious band” John Kinsella
The Chairman reported that the band is very lucky to have filled both the Solo Euphonium seat and Principal Cornet seat with fine players, Ben and John, who I am sure will enjoy playing with Milton Keynes Brass and will help us to become better and better. As February began with Neil continuing to support in a temporary role, it was noted that Neil had brought with him motivation, humour and enthusiasm which gelled with the playing members. There was a unanimous consensus to appoint Neil as the bands substantive Musical Director, which we are delighted to announce Neil has accepted.
‘Having helped MK Brass out many times in the past I was delighted to be asked to take them for their Christmas concert and the area competition, I’ve really enjoyed working with the band over that period so had no hesitation in saying yes when they asked me to be their permanent MD. To be joining at the same time as such incredible musicians in John and Ben really puts the band in a strong position going forward. I’m excited to see the fruits of our partnership.’ Neil Brownless BSc MMus
The Chairman is delighted with the triple signing. Milton Keynes Brass is in a fortunate position with a full band and excellent attendance at rehearsals, and with the addition of experienced musicians Neil, John and Ben, 2025 really is looking exciting as we embark into the Championship Section.
